I also find myself in agreement with many of my sentiments, and have had many similar conversations with my peers bemoaning the lack of respect and civility of, not just “those damn kids”, but by everyone. Personally, I think it stems from the narcissism that is reinforced by social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, whose main focuses are on one’s ability and obsession with updating everyone about lives.

To answer your question, no, it is not that difficult to respond “I’m fine, and yourself?” However, it is also just as easy to say that yes, it is difficult to respond in such a manner because many people today do not consider others when relaying information; such is the aim of social media sites and their ability to update others about everyday events.

I agree that rudeness is becoming more prevalent and manners are quickly disappearing, as the ability for interpersonal communication not fostered by internet forums is also disappearing. We are losing the ability to communicate with each other, let alone communicate politely. I think certainly technology plays a role in this. When was the last time you saw someone sit down in a public place and strike up a conversation with a stranger instead of whipping out an iPhone and playing angry birds?
